Card bets and booking points: the second-yellow trap
A second yellow can lead to a sending off without counting as another yellow in a card bet. Booking points can also produce a different total from a weighted card count, even when both markets describe the same soccer match. The number shown in a score app is therefore a starting point for checking settlement, rather than a complete answer.
The useful rule is match the settlement contract before comparing odds. Over 4.5 cards and over 45 booking points are not interchangeable selections. A straight red can break the apparent ten to one relationship, while a second yellow requires its own treatment. You need the market name, eligible participants and covered period as well as the line. This matters whether a tip comes from a subscription, a public post or your own analysis.
Card counts and booking points measure different things
Everyday language describes the referee showing cards. A betting market defines a quantity used for settlement. Total cards, booking points, a named player to be booked, team cards and a sending off are separate contracts. One incident can affect them differently without any settlement error. Start with the exact selection on your bet slip, not a generic explanation of soccer discipline.
In the bet365 Card Markets rules consulted on October 21, 2026, the specified counter gives a yellow a value of 1 and a red a value of 2. It ignores the second yellow and caps the contribution at 3 per player. Those are contractual weights: a red card does not become two physical cards. The page also defines which participants count and excludes cards shown after the final whistle. Check that this rule section covers your actual product.
The #OddsOnThat section of Betfair Sportsbook's Great Britain rules uses a different booking points system: 10 for yellow, 25 for red and 35 for a sending off through two yellows. That product excludes extra time and cards to nonactive participants under its definition. These are #OddsOnThat rules, not a rule for every Betfair market. They should not be transferred to another product, account region or sportsbook simply because its menu also says booking points.
Why multiplying by ten fails
| Individual outcome | Specified bet365 counter | Specified #OddsOnThat points |
|---|---|---|
| One yellow | 1 | 10 |
| Straight red without an earlier yellow | 2 | 25 |
| Sending off through two yellows | 3 | 35 |
A tenfold conversion works for the first row and fails for the next two. Two weighted cards would become 20 under that shortcut, whereas the cited points system assigns 25 to the straight red. Three would become 30 rather than 35 for two yellows leading to dismissal. Near a total line, that difference can change the result. The table compares the two cited contracts; it is not a conversion tool for copying a bet between them.
Reconstructing a second yellow correctly
Imagine a player receives a yellow in minute 28, another in minute 76 and then the red indicating dismissal. Under the specified bet365 count, record 1 for the first yellow, ignore the second yellow and add 2 for the red. That player contributes 3. Adding 1 + 1 + 2 would produce 4 and contradict the clause that removes the second yellow from the count.
Under the cited #OddsOnThat booking points rules, the dismissal through two yellows contributes 35. Do not calculate 10 + 10 + 25: that would give 45 and count an element the rule handles separately. The sporting sequence is the same; the two contractual measurements are 3 and 35. Watching how many times the referee reaches for a pocket cannot replace reading the measurement rule.
Also distinguish a straight red from dismissal through a second yellow. A match feed that only shows a red icon may not provide enough detail for checking settlement. Look for the sequence of sanctions rather than inferring it from a substitution marker or the time the player left the field. If a tip does not specify its counter, ask for that information before following it. An unexplained result label afterward will not repair an ambiguous recommendation.
A worked match example with different outcomes
Consider a hypothetical completed match within the contracted period. Three different players each receive one yellow. A fourth player is sent off through two yellows. There are no other sanctions, and every player meets the participation requirements of the markets being compared. This stripped down scenario isolates the counting rule; it is not a forecast of the likelihood of cards in any fixture.
The specified bet365 counter gives 3 for the three single yellows and 3 for the dismissed player, making 6. The cited #OddsOnThat points system gives 30 plus 35, making 65. Over 6.5 in the former loses. Over 64.5 points in the latter wins. These are different thresholds on different measurements, rather than rival prices for an identical event.
Suppose the winning selection had a stake of 2 units at decimal odds of 1.90. The return would be 3.80 units, including the returned stake, and the net result would be +1.80 units. The losing selection would produce −2 units. At a chosen unit size of €25, those changes would be +€45 and −€50. The example is hypothetical, assumes no extra commission and makes no promise that the quoted price is available.
What if the line is a whole number?
A final total of 65 does not by itself settle a selection labeled over 65. A two way market may return the stake at equality, while another market structure can have different terms. Read the equality clause instead of borrowing a push rule from a soccer goal total or a football spread. A half point line removes that exact tie, but it does not remove uncertainty about eligible players or the covered period.
The bench, substitutions and the final whistle
A coach, unused substitute or player already substituted can receive a visible card without contributing to a particular betting total. The contract's definition of eligible participants decides this. A general disciplinary statistic may include people excluded by the market. Comparing an app's overall card count with a slip without checking those people can therefore create a false impression that settlement is wrong.
Player card props need another check: what participation is required for the selection to have action, and what happens if the player receives a card after leaving play? Do not apply the #OddsOnThat exclusion for nonactive participants to every named player prop. A sportsbook can maintain separate participation rules for an individual market and counting rules for the match total. The exact combination has to be established before placing the bet.
Time matters too. Stoppage time extends a half; extra time is a separate period. The cited #OddsOnThat points exclude extra time. The specified bet365 card counter excludes cards after the final whistle. A feed updating a card after full time does not necessarily mean the card was shown after full time: distinguish the incident time from the data publication time before drawing a conclusion.
A practical checklist before following a card tip
- Identify whether the market measures weighted cards, booking points, an individual booking or a dismissal.
- Record the player or team, line, odds, period and full market name.
- Find the second yellow and straight red clauses for that product.
- Check the treatment of active players, substituted players, unused substitutes and staff.
- Confirm stoppage time, extra time and the cutoff for eligible sanctions.
- Work through one possible outcome using exactly those terms.
A post saying only “over cards” is not a reproducible bet. Even a line without the relevant counter can be insufficient. In live betting, also establish whether the total covers the whole match or another specified window. Do not assume earlier cards count, or do not count, just because you are placing the selection during play. The wording of the market has to answer that question.
Only after identifying equivalent contracts should you compare prices. The guide to calculating a bookmaker's margin explains why offered odds are not clean probabilities. That price analysis cannot turn a weighted count into a booking points contract. A higher price for a different line is not automatically a better version of the original tip.
How to investigate a disputed settlement
Build a player by player list of first yellows, second yellows, straight reds and participation status. Apply the counter to that list rather than adding every card graphic from the broadcast. Keep the slip, applicable terms, detailed match record and the operator's response. A useful query names the disputed sanction and the clause that should include it. A screenshot of an unexplained total usually leaves the central issue unresolved.
An abandoned match introduces a separate completion requirement. Correctly counting cards does not necessarily tell you whether the market stands. Read the guide to postponed and abandoned match settlement for that wider question. Passing an over line before the interruption does not automatically guarantee payment: the specific market's abandonment rule and any exceptions still matter.
Assessing a tipster's card betting record
Look for selections that distinguish the line and counter, rather than just a streak of wins. A history mixing card totals and points without explanation obscures the risk actually taken. The Tippium directory lets you review profiles and published net units and yield. Those figures do not establish future profitability or prove that someone placed real money bets at the recorded odds.
Tippium provides publishing, tracking and subscriptions; it is not a sportsbook. Automated profiles and demonstration data exist, and identity verification does not certify betting performance. Authors can edit or cancel eligible picks before the first event starts; afterward those actions are blocked. A confirmed paid reset can delete the history and statistics. Those limits matter when deciding what a recent public record actually demonstrates.
You can create a Tippium account to follow publications and first assess how clearly public picks describe their markets. Active premium picks require a subscription. Tippium does not execute bets or determine your sportsbook's contract. Your final check remains the same: selection, line, eligible participants, time period and the specific rule for disciplinary counting.
Betting can cause financial loss. Do not raise your stake to recover a settlement dispute, and stop betting if you lose control.
