Singles vs accumulators: which is more profitable and why
Over the long run, singles are usually more profitable than accumulators. The reason is mathematical: in an acca the bookmaker's margin multiplies with every leg. With a 5% margin per bet, a 3-fold carries 14.3% and a 5-fold more than 22%. Accas only make sense if every leg has value on its own, and even then they send variance through the roof.
What singles and accumulators are
A single is a bet on one outcome: if it wins, you get stake × odds. An accumulator (acca, multiple or parlay) combines several selections on one slip: the odds multiply, but every leg has to win. If one fails, the whole slip loses.
That "the odds multiply" is exactly what makes accas so tempting. Four selections at 2.00 make 16.00. What the slip doesn't show is the other thing that multiplies: the bookmaker's margin.
Compound margin: the sum that explains everything
Every price carries a margin for the bookmaker. If a market pays back 95% of what's staked, the margin is 5%. In an acca, what you get back is 0.95 multiplied by itself once for every leg:
| Legs | Theoretical return | Effective bookmaker margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (single) | 95.0% | 5.0% |
| 2 | 90.3% | 9.8% |
| 3 | 85.7% | 14.3% |
| 4 | 81.5% | 18.5% |
| 5 | 77.4% | 22.6% |
| 10 | 59.9% | 40.1% |
On a 10-fold, the bookmaker keeps 40p of every pound on average. To find the margin on the markets you usually bet, learn how to calculate a bookmaker's margin.
Your real chance of landing an acca
Four selections at 50% each give 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 6.25%: on average you'll land one in 16. And that's before any margin. It's why accas create that "so close" feeling: one leg letting you down out of four is normal, not bad luck.
Variance also explodes. With singles, a bad week might cost 5% of your bankroll; with accas you can lose 30 slips in a row even with good picks. We explain it in variance and losing streaks.
When does an acca make sense?
- When every leg has value on its own. If each bet has +5% expected value, the acca compounds that value too. But you need to be able to calculate it properly: read how to calculate a value bet.
- With small stakes, for fun. A £2 Saturday acca is entertainment, not a strategy.
- Carefully within the same match. In a bet builder the selections are usually correlated and the bookmaker shades the price down. We cover it in same game parlays and correlated odds.
Singles vs accumulators: summary
| Factor | Singles | Accumulators |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmaker margin | The market's own (2–8%) | Multiplies with every leg |
| Strike rate | High | Low |
| Variance | Manageable | Very high |
| Tracking performance | Easy (yield per bet) | Hard, few useful samples |
That last point matters: with singles you can measure your yield over hundreds of bets in a few months; with accas it takes years to know whether you're really winning.
What profitable tipsters do
Most tipsters with a positive long-term record post mainly singles. If someone sells 30/1 accas every day, check their full record before paying: in the Tippium tipsters list every pick is logged before the event, with its odds and result. Many users follow those picks at Stake, a crypto sportsbook with broad markets; if you do, bet the selections as singles unless the tipster says otherwise.
Why the Stake link won't open or shows an error
If you're in a restricted country such as Spain, France, the UK or the US and you tap the Stake link, the site will usually fail to load, stay blank or show a "not available in your country" message. The link isn't broken and neither is your phone: Stake geo-blocks the countries it doesn't accept, based on the IP address you connect from.
How many people connect with Mullvad, step by step
The route many users take is a VPN, an app that makes your connection appear to come from another country. The most common example is Mullvad. Here's how it works, in plain terms:
- Create a Mullvad account. Go to mullvad.net, click to generate an account number and write it down: there's no email or name, that number is your username and password in one.
- Pay for the time you want. It costs about €5 a month and you can pay by card, PayPal or crypto.
- Install the app. Download it for Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone and log in with your account number.
- Pick a server in a country Stake accepts. In Mullvad's location list, choose a country with servers that isn't on Stake's prohibited jurisdictions list, for example Finland, Romania, Hong Kong or Albania. Check that list in the terms first, because it changes.
- Hit "Connect". Wait until the app shows the connection as secure (it turns green).
- Open the Stake link. With the VPN on, use this link to Stake: the site should load normally so you can sign up and deposit.
- Keep the VPN on every time you log in. If you switch it off or change country mid-session, the site will block you again or ask for extra checks.
What Stake's terms say: read this before you deposit
The site loading doesn't mean it's allowed. Clause 14.4 of Stake's terms forbids using a VPN, proxy or false residence details to get around geo-blocking, and under clauses 5.2 and 4.21 Stake can close the account, void bets and withhold the balance, winnings included. On top of that, identity verification (KYC) can ask for an ID and proof of your real address, so the country you live in eventually shows up. If you choose this route, it's at your own risk: only deposit what you're prepared to lose, withdraw often and always check the current terms, because they change.
If you live in a country where Stake is available, you don't need any of this: open Stake here and sign up directly. If you're in a restricted country and don't want that risk, the alternative is a locally licensed bookmaker.
Gamble responsibly: only stake money you can afford to lose and, if betting stops being fun, reach out to a support service in your country.
FAQs
Do accumulators pay more?
They pay bigger odds, but return less over time because of the compound margin.
What's the most legs I should use?
If you're going to bet accas, the fewer the better: two or three legs at most keep the margin at a sensible level.
What about acca boosts?
Some promotions offset part of the margin. Do the maths: compare the boost with the stacked margin in the table.
18+ only. Big odds don't make up for the risk of losing: please gamble responsibly.
